RM Auction Results-Sports & Classics of Monterey Auction

RM Auctions held its 2009 Sports & Classics of Monterey auction on August 13th to 15th at the Portola Hotel & Spa and Monterey Convention Centre in Monterey, California.

RM Auctions’ 24th annual auction featured nearly 240 cars, in which 26 were Ferrari’s. Resulting in total sales in excess of $35 million and 12 cars surpassing the $500,000 mark.

Car collectors, dealers and enthusiasts from around the world made the annual pilgrimage to Portola Hotel & Spa and Monterey Convention Centre in Monterey, California. With global interest and enthusiasm in the 2009 Monterey event led to a packed sales room of active bidders each of the three evenings and RM is confident that throughout the course of the next few days several other major transactions will take place and continue to elevate these numbers in excess of the anticipated pre-sale expectations,” Kelleher added.

When the auction catalogues started arriving on my desk earlier this month it became clear that RM Auctions had risen to the challenge and was pulling out all the stops to put on good sales.

What I could not help noticing about this year’s Monterey sale and this is symptomatic of the current worldwide classic car market is that only the top cars will make the top money and the rest will sell but at todays lower prices. My Predictions? I think The 2009 Sports & Classics of Monterey auction has sets the market scene for the rest of the year and maybe next.

The Top Sales At This Year’s Event Were:

1952 Ferrari 225S Berlinetta Vignola – Sold for $781,000 versus pre-sale estimate of $600,000 - $800,000. One of six competition Berlinettas, with 38 years of continuous ownership.

1952 Ferrari 212 Touring Barchetta Sold for $440,000 versus Estimate of $350,000-$400,000

1973 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Spyder – Sold for $880,000 versus pre-sale estimate of $900,000 - $1,100,000. Formerly owned by NBA great Jerry West.

1973 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Spyder

1965 Ferrari 275 GTB – Sold for $605,000 versus pre-sale estimate of $575,000 - $675,000.

1957 Ferrari 250 GT Boano Coupe – Sold for $583,000 versus pre-sale estimate of $550,000 - $650,000.

1962 Ferrari 250 GT Series II Cabriolet - Sold for $467,500 versus pre-sale estimate of $350,000-$450,000.

1991 Ferrari F40 - Sold for $ 462,000 versus its pre-sale Estimate of $425,000-$495,000 an original factory specification F40 showing less than 5500 miles and was recently exhibited at the 2009 Cavallino classic in palm beach,

The surprise of the sale was perhaps the 1985 288GTO and the 1953 Ferrari 166MM Spyder Scaglietti that did not sell whilst being two of my personal favourites and would have made a worthy centrepiece for most collections.

1985 Ferrari 288 GTO – Did not sell at high bid of $410,000 versus pre-sale estimate of $485,000 - $595,000

1953 Ferrari 166MM Spyder Scaglietti – Did not sell at high bid of $1,100,000 versus pre-sale estimate of $1,400,000 - $1,800,000. Given by Enzo Ferrari to his son Dino for a design project with Scaglietti, it is known as the first Scaglietti-bodied competition Ferrari.
