Ferrari 4 Litre GTO Recreation s/n 6713
History
Over the last 20 years, numerous GTO replicas have been built. Very few have been built to a genuinely high standard, the majority are turned out to somewhat varying lesser levels. The unique construction and complexity of the original GTO, dictate that most replicas are based on a lesser “donor” car and become a compromise between originality and the cost of construction.
Details that are normally lost and in most cases ignored completely have been carefully recreated for the construction of this vehicle. Examples include, bespoke chassis, the unique Watts link rear suspension, engine specification and placement, transmission, correct “riveted “ alloy fuel tank and dry sump oil tank.
This is one of the single finest examples ever completed. Without being shown the chassis number, few individuals are capable of distinguishing this from the original. This a precise recreation of an original GTO. Do not confuse the construction of this car with a re-body on a chopped down 250 GTE chassis.
Subsequent to the completion of construction by Chris Lawrence the car was sent to Terry Hoyle Engineering for finishing touches and sorting. Hoyle was so impressed with the exacting standard of construction, he retained it his personal use. Enter the Japanese collector Yoshijuki Hayashi, who owned the genuine 250 GTO s/n 3705. By 1989 the price genuine 250 GTO had risen dramatically to over $10,000,000 (Takeo Kato purchased 3909GT). Realizing the risk of using a $10M car, Hayashi purchased this car from Hoyle at a price variously reported to be well in excess of £1.0M.
4 Liter Engine
This car is powered by a type 163 engine specially selected to conform to the original 4 Liter GTO configuration. The type 163 engine series shares basic architecture and all major castings with the 330 America / 330LMB / 400SA / 500SA and should not be confused with a later 330GT type 209.
Using engine 5273 which started life as a 330 America, all internal components were upgraded to full GTO / LMB specification to include high compression pistons, rods and P4 camshafts. In addition the engine was fit with a GTO / LMB dry sump lubrication system and six Weber 40DCN carburetors.
Subsequent to the acquisition by Tillack & Co., this unique engine has undergone a comprehensive, no expense spared rebuild to include:
New Venolia 9.5/1 pistons with Total Seal rings
New Carrillo Rods
New Ferrera stainless steel valves.
New Piper Camshafts
Drive line
The engine drives through a correct Colatti built 5 speed GTO transmission. In conjunction with the engine rebuild, Tillack & Co carried out a complete rebuild of the transmission and drive line, to include:
New Tilton competition clutch
New 9-34 (3.88) ring & Pinion
New Quaif limited slip differential.
New 4340 Axels
Chassis and Body
The body has been constructed from templates pulled from an original 4 liter car. Shape and proportion are faithful to the original, which has been one of the most notable failings of the majority of rebodied cars. Keeping faithful to original, the bonnet features an enlarged blister to provide clearance for the larger 4.0 liter engine.
The chassis is an exact copy of the original GTO, built from scratch by Chris Lawrence using the correct GTO spec [smaller diameter and lighter weight than the production cars] oval tubing.
The front suspension uses the dropped spindle as original the GTO.
The rear suspension is the correct GTO type watts link.
The GTO “riveted “ alloy fuel tank and dry sump oil tank have been faithfully reproduced..
Additional upgrades carried out Subsequent to the acquisition by Tillack & Co., to include:
Complete rebuild of brake system including lightweight front calipers.
New Koni Shocksable
Available for inspection by appointment.
